Gary Gilmore's gun up for sale

SPANISH FORK, Utah, July 13 (UPI) -- A Utah bail bondsman and bounty hunter hopes to get at least $1 million from the sale of the gun Gary Gilmore used in two deadly robberies.

Dennis Stilson of Spanish Fork has put the gun up for sale on Murderauction.com, the Deseret Morning News reported. Stilson bought the gun after it was returned to the man Gilmore stole it from.

Gilmore died by firing squad in 1977, a year after the U.S. Supreme Court upheld some state death penalty laws. He was sentenced to death for killing a gas station employee and a motel manager in robberies and refused to appeal his sentence.

Stilson has made earlier attempts to sell the gun. At one point, he arranged a contest, with the gun to go to the entrant who wrote the best essay on the death penalty, but too few people were willing to pay the $100 entry fee.
