Actor shot in head during Wild West show

NEWTON, N.J., July 13 (UPI) -- Investigators are trying to determine how an actor playing a gunslinger in a Wild West show in North Jersey was shot in the head.

Scott Harris of Netcong has been unconscious since he collapsed last Friday during a show at Wild West City in Byram, the Star-Ledger of Newark reported. He remained in critical condition Thursday at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey in Newark.

No one realized that Harris had been shot until he was examined at the hospital, since he showed little sign of injury.

William Fitzgibbons, the first assistant Sussex County prosecutor, said authorities are uncertain what hit Harris. He said actors in the show use a wide range of weapons, including ones resembling starter's pistols and real guns loaded with blanks.

He suggested a gun might have had a fragment of bullet in the chamber.

The Rev. Hugh Matlack of the First Presbyterian Church in Stanhope, a friend of the Harris family, said Harris is a classical guitarist who makes a living performing and giving lessons. He said Harris grew up next door to Wild West City and enjoyed working there as well.
