LOUISVILLE, Ky., July 12 (UPI) -- Lawyers defending a former U.S. soldier against rape charges in Iraq have sought a U.S. gag order that would apply to the Pentagon and White House.
Public defenders Scott Wendelsdorf and Patrick Bouldin filed the papers on behalf of former Pvt. Steven Green in federal court in Louisville, Ky., on Tuesday, saying the media coverage was making it impossible for Green to get a fair trial.
Green and four other active soldiers are charged in the rape and murder of an Iraqi teenager and her family.
The petition noted comments by senior military and political figures that could skew a jury, including President George Bush telling CNN the alleged incident was a "despicable crime" and said Green was "staining the image, the honorable image of the United States military."
The lawyers also quoted the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, U.S. Marine Gen. Peter Pace, who described the alleged incident as "totally unacceptable" to The Los Angeles Times.
Prosecutors have until July 25 to file their responses to the request, a court clerk told CNN.
