WASHINGTON, July 11 (UPI) -- White House aide Karl Rove says U.S. President George Bush is "emphatic" about vetoing a bill that allows embryonic stem-cell research, the Denver Post reports.
In an interview with the Post's editorial board, Bush's top political adviser said Bush's first presidential veto would be unfortunate, but necessary.
"The president is emphatic about this," said Rove. "It is something we would, frankly, like to avoid."
Last year, the Republican-dominated U.S. House of Representatives voted 238-194 last year to pass the legislation. The Senate is poised to take it up soon, and Rove said he expected it to pass with more than 60 votes.
The bill was co-sponsored by Rep. Diana DeGette, D-Colo., and Rep. Mike Castle, R-Del., and DeGette said Monday she wasn't pleased with Rove's prediction.
"I'm appalled that Bush would use the first veto of his presidency to veto a bill that could help 110 million people and their families," she said.
