DILI, Timor-Leste, July 9 (UPI) -- Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Jose Ramos-Horta has been sworn in as prime minister of Timor-Leste.
Ramos-Horta's appointment is aimed at restoring calm to the nation that was plunged into civil strife when Prime Minister Mari Alkatiri sacked about half of the 1,400-strong army when soldiers complained of discrimination. After nearly three months of rioting, Alkatiri resigned two weeks ago.
Ramos-Horta, 56, was sworn in during ceremonies in the office of Timor-Leste President Xanana Gusmao, guarded by about 50 troops of the 2,200 Australian-led peacekeeping force.
Political observers say that Ramos-Horta, who shared the 1996 Nobel Peace Prize with Carlos Filipe Ximenes Belo for work toward a peaceful solution to the conflict in the former East Timor, faces a tough task to settle the grievances of the sacked soldiers and rebuild a police force that disintegrated in the last month.
