Balkans, EU, NATO alliance will avoid war

DUBROVNIK, Croatia, July 10 (UPI) -- There will be no regional wars once southeastern Europe's countries join the European Union and NATO, Croatia's premier said Monday.

Speaking at the Croatia Summit 2006 conference in Dubrovnik, Premier Ivo Sanader said the region should promote mutual trade and investments through the Central European Free Trade Association, or CEFTA. He also said CEFTA should widen to include Moldova and Ukraine after Bulgaria and Romania join the EU and leave CEFTA.

Sanader said he couldn't foresee any further regional wars in southeastern Europe as countries were boosting political and economic cooperation on their joint way to the EU and NATO membership.

The summit is discussing integration of southeast Europe into Euro-Atlantic associations, Croatia's HINA news agency reported.
