Judge completes Madrid terror attack probe

MADRID, July 8 (UPI) -- A Spanish judge says he has completed his investigation into the 2004 Madrid train bombings and is sending the case to trial.

No trial date has been set and pretrial motions are expected to take several months, the BBC reported Saturday.

National Court Judge Juan del Olmo confirmed the indictments he handed down in April against 29 people. The indictments said the group behind the attack was al-Qaida inspired, but had no direct links with Osama Bin Laden's terrorist group.

The March 11, 2004 bombs exploded in crowded commuter trains, killing 191 people and wounding more than 1,800.

Separately, a disciplinary committee is investigating why Del Olmo did not seek to extend the detainment of a bombings suspect.

Saed El Harrak was released in June after Del Olmo, who has occasionally been ill, missed a deadline to keep him in custody, the BBC said. Harrak allegedly made telephone calls before the bombings to other suspects and was charged with collaborating with a terrorist organization.

The terms of his release require he check in with authorities twice a day and remain in Madrid indefinitely.
