LONDON, July 6 (UPI) -- The British Home Office has ruled that a man accused of hacking into military computers in the United States can be extradited there to stand trial.

Gary McKinnon, a former hairdresser from Glasgow who describes himself as a "bumbling computer nerd," could face decades in prison if he is convicted, The Scotsman reported. He plans to appeal the extradition order.

McKinnon allegedly accessed a network of computers at New Jersey's Earle Naval Weapons Station, rendering the system unusable in the period immediately after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. He allegedly hacked into 97 military and NASA computers in 2001 and 2002.

"I was amazed at the lack of security and the reason I left not just one note but multiple notes on multiple desktops was to say: look, this is ridiculous," McKinnon said. "My intention was never to disrupt security."

McKinnon, who says he worked out of his bedroom using a dial-up modem, says he was also looking for evidence of UFOs.
