Astronauts hard at work at space station

HOUSTON, July 7 (UPI) -- The crew of the space shuttle Discovery had a busy day Friday at the International Space Station.

Their tasks included removing the Italian-built Leonardo logistics module -- carrying equipment to support experiments -- from Discovery's payload bay and attaching it to the space station, NASA reported. The schedule also included using the shuttle's robotic arm for inspection of the orbiter heat shields and preparations for a 6 1/2-hour space walk on Saturday.

STS-121 pilot Mark Kelly told CBS Radio that so far Discovery appears to be in good condition.

"At this point we're really satisfied," Kelly said.

Discovery, which launched from Cape Canaveral on Tuesday, rendezvoused with the space station on Thursday. The shuttle carried a crew of seven and the Leonardo module with 7,000 pounds of supplies and equipment for the space station. One astronaut from Discovery, Thomas Reiter of the European Space Agency, is to remain at the station with the two astronauts already there.

The entire Discovery mission is expected to take 12 days.
