Vatican to open WWII Pope Pius material

VATICAN CITY, June 30 (UPI) -- Vatican archives involving Pope Pius XI and the beginning of World War II will be opened to researchers, Pope Benedict XVI announced Friday.

Documents are expected to be available Sept. 18 and cover the period of Feb. 6, 1922, to Feb. 10, 1939, AGI said.

Included will be correspondence about the actions of Eugenio Pacelli, later Pius XII, when he was papal nuncio, or the pope's representative, in Germany in early wartime.
