Mexico: Campaigns shut down ahead of vote

MEXICO CITY, June 29 (UPI) -- Mexican candidates for president have wrapped up their campaigns ahead of this weekend's election, El Universal reported Thursday.

A nationwide ban on further campaigning took effect Thursday to give voters time to contemplate their choice in the July 2 election.

The race remains extremely tight between the two front runners: leftist former Mexico City Mayor Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador and center-right candidate Felipe Calderon.

Lopez Obrador is polling 36 percent of voters' support while Calderon has garnered 34 percent of the potential vote in the latest surveys.
