Finland diplomat: EU to debate Serbia

BRUSSELS, June 29 (UPI) -- Finland's foreign minister said Thursday foreign ministers of the European Union are set to debate Serbia's association talks, cut off in May.

In Brussels, Finnish Foreign Minister Erkki Tuomioja, whose country takes over the rotating EU presidency from Austria on July 1, said the bloc will confirm the European approach to the Balkan countries while considering the future process of EU enlargement, Belgrade's Beta news agency reported.

EU foreign ministers are to meet in Brussels July 17 and are expected to work out separate mandates for association talks with Serbia and with Montenegro, after the two-state union dissolved late in May.

The EU broke off association talks with Serbia May 3 after Belgrade failed to arrest and hand over Bosnian Serb war crimes suspect Ratko Mladic to the U.N. tribunal in The Hague. Mladic faces genocide and war crimes charges stemming from his activities in the former Yugoslavia from 1991-95.
