Tennessee executes 2nd man since 1960

NASHVILLE, June 28 (UPI) -- The state of Tennessee executed convicted rapist and killer Sedley Alley by lethal injection early Wednesday.

Alley, 50, was pronounced dead at 2:12 a.m. at the state's death chamber at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in west Nashville, the Tennessean reported.

Alley was convicted of raping and killing 19-year-old Suzanne Collins, a Marine, near Memphis in 1985.

The Collins family did not witness the execution but Alley's adult son and daughter were present, the newspaper said.

Around midnight, federal judges blocked Alley's execution and one also scheduled for death row inmate Paul Reid. Reid's stay was granted based on the outcome of mental competency hearing, the newspaper said.

Two hours later, the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals overturned the stay, and Alley became the second state execution since 1960.
