KHARTOUM, Sudan, June 28 (UPI) -- The African Union peacekeepers patrolling genocide-afflicted Sudan may leave within three months as U.N. diplomats try to secure another plan.
The head of the AU's Peace and Security Council, South African Foreign Minister Nkosazana Dlaminini Zuma, said his force will leave Darfur by Sept. 30 unless the United Nations and Sudan reach a deal.
At least 200,000 people have been killed and millions displaced in fighting between government-supported militias and rebel groups in the Darfur region of Sudan. The United States has called the systematic killings of black Sudanese genocide.
Sudan has rejected U.N. peacekeepers but allowed the AU force, the BBC reports.
Jean-Marie Guehenno, the head of U.N. peacekeeping, said he may be able to offer funding and resources for the AU force to remain.
