BANGKOK, June 25 (UPI) -- Thailand Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra said Sunday there will be no more resignations of cabinet members.
Thaksin's comment followed widespread rumors that some cabinet members were considering leaving, after the resignation of Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam Saturday, the Thailand News Agency reported.
Defense Minister Gen. Thammarak Isarangura Na Ayutthaya is the latest minister rumored to resign. Finance Minister Thanong Bidaya and Deputy Prime Minister and Commerce Minister Somkid Jatusripitak also denied rumors that they intended to leave.
Thaksin promised he would lead the ruling Thai Rak Thai party to contest the upcoming general election.
The prime minister said the resignations of Wissanu and of Bovornsak Uwanno -- who left his post as secretary-general of the cabinet to enter the monkhood -- would not have much adverse effect on the caretaker government.
Wissanu's duties will be assigned to the remaining deputy prime ministers or to the minister for the prime minister's office instead, said Thaksin.
