SACRAMENTO, June 24 (UPI) -- California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has rejected a White House request to send another 1,500 National Guard troops to the U.S.-Mexico border.
The Republican governor had previously agreed to deploy 1,000 troops to the border, as part of a 6,000 member force to guard against illegal immigration. The White House had asked Schwarzenegger for 1,500 more soldiers, The Los Angeles Times reported.
Schwarzenegger declined, his office confirmed Friday, expressing concern such a commitment might leave the state vulnerable if a natural disaster -- such as an earthquake or wildfire -- arose.
Citing a California National Guard official who spoke on condition of anonymity, the Times said the additional California troops the White House had requested would have been deployed to Arizona and New Mexico.
"The governor did not feel that it was appropriate to send additional Guard out of state," said Schwarzenegger spokesman Adam Mendelsohn.
A White House spokesman suggested that Schwarzenegger's decision might disrupt the Bush administration timetable for guarding the border with National Guard troops by Aug. 1, the newspaper said.
