N.Y., D.C. mayors slam anti-terror funding

WASHINGTON, June 22 (UPI) -- The mayors of New York and Washington have condemned cuts to federal anti-terror funding for their cities, both of which have already been targeted.

D.C. Mayor Anthony Williams and New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg each spoke before the House Committee on Homeland Security, where they had arranged for a display of huge color photographs of the World Trade Center and the Pentagon in flames on Sept. 11, 2001.

The men criticized the Department of Homeland Security's decision to trim their anti-terror funding by 40 percent, while increasing funding to Charlotte, N.C.; Omaha, Neb.; and Louisville, Ky., the Washington Post reported.

"There are places that should get the agriculture money because they have agriculture," Bloomberg said. "And there are places that should get the homeland security money because they have targets."

DHS officials claim New York still gets the most funding under the new system while Washington ranks fourth behind Los Angeles and Chicago.
