Summer brings storms to U.S. Midwest

RACINE, Wis., June 21 (UPI) -- Powerful thunderstorms moved across Iowa into southeast Wisconsin on the first day of summer leaving hundreds of homes without electric power.

The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Illinois, Iowa and portions of Wisconsin until 6 p.m. Strong storms were expected to redevelop Wednesday afternoon moving at 30 mph to 40 mph with showers and heavy rain at times, WFLD-TV Chicago, said.

Hail and high winds were possible in Milwaukee and tornadoes were likely.

A line of morning storms put on a spectacular lightning show in Detroit and more bad weather was predicted into the evening rush hour, the Detroit News reported.

"Our whole area is going to be unstable," said NWS meteorologist David Shuler. "Some of these storms could be severe."
