Bush: 'I'd like to close Guantanamo'

VIENNA, June 21 (UPI) -- U.S. President George Bush Wednesday said he understands the concerns of European leaders regarding the Guantanamo Bay prisoner camp.

"First, I'd like to end Guantanamo," Bush said in opening remarks at the summit with European leaders in Vienna. "I'd like it to be over with."

Bush pledged to send prisoners back to their home countries but he noted that probably won't happen in all cases.

"There are some who need to be tried in U.S. courts," Bush said. "They're cold-blooded killers. They will murder somebody if they're let out on the street. And yet, we believe there's a -- there ought to be a way forward in a court of law, and I'm waiting for the Supreme Court of the United States to determine the proper venue in which these people can be tried."
