LONDON, June 19 (UPI) -- Police in England are questioning two suspects in the killing of a teenage boy who was beaten to death with a cricket bat for no apparent reason.

Sixteen-year-old Michael Chapman, his brother and two girls were walking home after a night out when he was ambushed by two youths on the playing fields of the Gore Court cricket club in Sittingbourne, the London Times reported Monday.

According to police, Michael was severely beaten in an apparently motiveless attack.

"This was not a robbery. This was an unprovoked and gratuitous attack. We cannot rule out this was just unplanned violence," said Detective Superintendent Lee Catling.

Police have arrested an 18-year-old and a 16-year-old on suspicion of murder in the case.
