JERUSALEM, June 19 (UPI) -- The European Union reportedly will not recognize any Israel-Palestinian Authority border drawn through unilateral steps that do not lead to lasting peace.
That stance was made clear by EU External Relations Commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner after her meeting with Israel's Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni in Jerusalem, reports Ynetnews.com.
Ferrero-Waldner praised the realignment plan of Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert calling for a unilateral withdrawal from the West Bank as a courageous idea, but said Europeans believe unilateral steps do not lead to real peace, the report said.
Ferrero-Waldner said, "EU will not recognize any borders between Israel, Palestinian Authority determined by unilateral steps."
In response, Livni said, "We believe that stalemate does not constitute policy and does not promote a solution for both nations."
Ferrero-Waldner visited Israel to present a mechanism for the transfer of funds to the Palestinians. Israel would study the plan before making a decision, the report said.
