Man charged with abetting wife's suicide

NYACK, N.Y., June 16 (UPI) -- A New York man whose wife drove off a cliff in a state park with her children faces charges of promoting suicide.

The two children survived with only minor injuries but Hejin Han, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was killed, the Daily News reported.

Investigators say that Victor Han, after his wife told him that she wanted to kill herself, got out of the minivan leaving the motor running. He said that he stopped at a pullout to take a snapshot from a scenic overlook on the road that winds around Bear Mountain, the newspaper said.

The car landed on a steep slope on the mountainside, the Rockland Journal-News reported. One hiker who tried to come to the aid of Hejin Han got stuck and had to be rescued himself.

Police questioned Han for about 15 hours before charging him. He appeared for arraignment in Rockland County on Friday, where a judge set bail.

In addition to the promoting suicide charge, he faces two counts of reckless endangerment and two counts of child endangerment, the Daily News said.
