NEW YORK, June 11 (UPI) -- Firefighters killed in the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks are remembered in a 56-foot bronze relief, unveiled across from New York's World Trade Center.
The large memorial, unveiled Saturday, was created to celebrate and remember the fire department's 343 dead, The New York Times reported. The monument stands on the side of "10 House," the home of Engine Company 10 and Ladder Company 10.
Within moments of the monument's unveiling, firefighters and family members of the fallen were on their knees rubbing the inscribed names of those who lost their lives trying to rescue the victims of the attacks, the Times said.
"I wish his name was not on that wall," said Miriam Juarbe, the mother of Firefighter Angel L. Juarbe Jr. "He made us proud. He gave too much."
Former Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani was present, and President George Bush made comments on a videotaped message.
