KKK attends Antietam reenactment

SHARPSBURG, Md., June 11 (UPI) -- A Ku Klux Klan leader rallied a few dozen protestors in Maryland during a recreation of the Civil War battle at Antietam while others shouted them down.

The Saturday protests marked the first time ever a group had been permitted to do so at the former family farm where the deadliest battle of the Civil War was fought, the Baltimore Sun reported Sunday.

Gordon Young, imperial wizard of the World Knights of the KKK led 30 men, women and children at Antietam National Battlefield in Sharpsburg, Md.

He said they gathered to remember people who fought for white people's liberty and speak out against unfair treatment of white people today.

Some dressed in white robes while members of the National Socialist Movement wore swastikas.

Of the 200-strong law enforcement contingent monitoring the event, a dozen riot police stood between the KKK protest and a makeshift group of area residents opposed to their beliefs.

The two groups were kept hundreds of feet away and there was no violence.
