WASHINGTON, June 7 (UPI) -- The U.S. Senate derailed attempts Wednesday for a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriages by a 49-48 vote.
Republicans were divided on the issue, and all but one Democrat, Sen. Ben Nelson, D-Neb., voted against the amendment, 365Gay.com reported.
Debate began Monday on the measure, which was sponsored by Sen. Wayne Allard, R-Colo. He opened his statement by saying: "Marriage today is under assault."
However, Wednesday morning, Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., called the entire effort a waste of time, CNN reported.
"The reason the Senate Republicans are pushing this marriage amendment is because they don't want to address the real issues of this country," Reid said.
To succeed, a constitutional amendment requires at least 60 votes in the procedural round, then a two-thirds majority in both houses before it can be sent to the states. Then, at least 38 would have to ratify it for it to become law.
