Shin Bet chief: Tons of arms in Gaza

JERUSALEM, June 6 (UPI) -- Arms and explosives smuggling into Gaza has skyrocketed since the Israeli pullout, Israel's intelligence chief told a parliamentary committee Tuesday.

Shin Bet chief Yuval Diskin testified before the Knesset's Foreign Affairs Committee that serious attempts have been made to establish World Jihad centers in Jerusalem and Nablus, Ha'aretz reported.

Israel has successfully kept military supplies from being moved from Gaza to the West Bank, Diskin said. But he said that Egypt has failed in its efforts to prevent smuggling across its border with Gaza to Hamas.

More arms have been brought into Gaza since last September than in the entire period between the Six-Day War in 1967 and the Israeli withdrawal, Diskin said. He listed the total as 11 tons of TNT, three million bullets, 19,600 rifles, 1,600 pistols, 65 rocket-propelled grenade launchers, 430 RPGs and some 10 shoulder rocket launchers, the Jerusalem Post said.
