Talks in Timor-Leste delayed

DILI, Timor-Leste, June 5 (UPI) -- A meeting on bringing the rival factions of Timor-Leste's police and military together for peace talks has been postponed.

Timor-Leste's new Defense Minister Jose Ramos Horta had been planning to fly to the mountains to the south of the capital where Alfredo Reinado, one of the leaders of 600 sacked members of the security forces, is holed up with a group of armed military policemen, the Australian Broadcasting Corp. reported.

Instead, the minister went for talks with a separate group of estranged military officers on the outskirts of Dili.

The U.N. special envoy Ian Martin plans to brief the Security Council this week on the situation in Timor-Leste. A spokesman said the council will then consider whether to send in more U.N. troops, the network reported.
