Rumsfeld praises Vietnam's economy

HANOI, Vietnam, June 5 (UPI) -- U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, who is visiting Vietnam, has full praise for the economic progress of the former U.S. foe.

Rumsfeld, who was to discuss military relations with the United States with his counterpart Pham Van Tra, said Vietnam has made "amazing economic achievements" in the past 11 years, reports the BBC.

Rumsfeld was careful to play down speculation that the United States is seeking new bases in the region. Last week, the two countries signed a trade deal.

"Last night (Sunday), after I arrived, I was able to take a short walk around Hanoi and feel the vibrancy and energy," Rumsfeld said.
