Release delayed for police torture report

CHICAGO, June 3 (UPI) -- A judge has delayed release of a report on police torture in Chicago until the Illinois Supreme Court rules on protecting the identity of a witness.

The high court could review the issue at any time, the Chicago Tribune reports, although the justices are not scheduled to have formal hearings until September.

"We've been fighting this case for 35 years," said Flint Taylor, a lawyer representing one of the alleged victims of torture. "There have been roadblocks at every turn."

The report involves the activities of officers led by Commander Jon Burge, a decorated Vietnam veteran and police officer. Burge was fired in the early 1990s and now lives in Florida.

An investigation began after the state Supreme Court ruled that a man convicted of killing two police officers in 1982 had confessed under torture.
