Chile: Thousands of students protest

SANTIAGO, Chile, May 31 (UPI) -- Chilean police used tear gas to disperse thousands of Chilean student protesters calling for education reform, El Mercurio reported Wednesday.

More than 600 students were arrested in the capital, Santiago.

In all, some half a million students throughout Chile protested calling for an end to exam fees, free buses and a revised curriculum, the report said.

President Michelle Bachelet has said she agreed that reform to the country's educational system was necessary.
