Russia advocates Kosovo talks compromise

PRISTINA, Serbia, May 26 (UPI) -- A Russian diplomat says talks between Serbs and ethnic-Albanians on the future of Serbia's Kosovo province should end in a compromise.

Vladimir Titov, a deputy Russian foreign minister, said Friday Moscow advocates a solution which will take into consideration the stands of both sides, the Belgrade Beta news agency reported.

Kosovo's Prime Minister Agim Ceku, after meeting Titov, said he told the Russian diplomat he hopes Kosovo will become an independent state.

An independent Kosovo will guarantee rights for all its citizens, Ceku said.

Representatives of the Contact Group, comprising the United States, Russia, Britain, France, Germany, and Italy, were meeting Friday in Paris to review results of five rounds of talks on the future of Kosovo.

A sixth round of the U.N.-led Kosovo talks is scheduled for Wednesday in Vienna.

Kosovo's 90 percent ethnic-Albanians want the province independent from the Serbian government in Belgrade, while the Serb minority of 100,000 demand full autonomy for their enclaves.

The Kosovo talks should decide who will govern the province once U.N. and NATO personnel leave.
