WANTAGH, N.Y., May 26 (UPI) -- A New York couple is suing their school district and the county Board of Cooperative Educational Services for locking their son in a padded room numerous times.
Janet and William Schafer say settlement negotiations with the Nassau County, N.Y., board and the Hicksville school district haven't been successful so they decided to file suit for $190 million.
They say their 15-year-old, developmentally disabled son was locked in the padded room 40 times during five months last year. The child suffers from claustrophobia and seizures and the Schafers say he could have been hurt in the room, Newsday reports.
The newspaper said the Shafers found out about it when they went to Rosemary Kennedy School in Wantagh, N.Y. and found the child locked up.
The defendants didn't comment beyond denying they did anything wrong after the boy fought students and didn't listen to teachers, Newsday said.
The state Board of Regents is considering turning guidelines on such time-out rooms into regulations, which will allow officials to enforce standards better.
The boy has since been moved to a private school, Newsday said.
