BELGRADE, Serbia, May 24 (UPI) -- The loss of its partner state of Montenegro in an independence referendum means Serbia would be left without access to the Adriatic Sea and its navy.
Only last week, Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica in an attempt to show how both Serbia and Montenegro benefit from their state union, said, "When we are together, Serbia has the sea, and Montenegro has the Danube."
Now, after the Sunday referendum brought independence to Montenegro and seceded the tiny state from its union with Serbia, Kostunica's government will have no sea. Serbia is left only with a modest river fleet.
And, Montenegro needs no strong navy similar to the fleet the former Yugoslavia boasted with about 80 warships some 15 years ago. A fleet of speedy coast guard-type vessels to patrol the Adriatic Sea will do, London's Daily Telegraph reported.
Montenegro's problem may be how to sell well naval bases to foreign tourist entrepreneurs, the newspaper said.
