BRUSSELS, May 23 (UPI) -- The European Union and Russia are set to approve a new visa agreement at a summit meeting this week.
The talks begin Thursday in the Russian resort of Sochi on the Black Sea, the EU Observer reports.
While the visa pact will allow citizens of the European Union and Russia to move freely after paying 35 euros ($45) for a visa, starting in 2007, the summit has a darker side. Many European leaders are unhappy with Russia's role in efforts to halt Iran's nuclear program and with its use of its clout as a major energy supplier.
"Under Russia's protection, Iran has won a lot of time," former Lithuanian President Vytautis Landsbergis told the EU Observer. "The growing conflict in the Middle East is of Russia's economic and geopolitical interest, in terms of petrodollar income."
Vladimir Chizhov, Russia's ambassador to the European Union, was upbeat, saying that his country and Europe have similar aims with Iran. He said that Russia and Europe are fated to be both allies and competitors.
