Some sperm donors no longer anonymous

ANN ARBOR, Mich., May 21 (UPI) -- More sperm donors are making themselves available for contact with families of children conceived with their sperm -- including one in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Pediatrician Matthew Niedner began donating sperm after a patient suggested he might be a good candidate, the Detroit Free Press said. He started dropping off a sample once or twice a week for seven years. Mostly, he liked helping people who couldn't have children.

Niedner became known at the clinic as donor 48QAH -- Quite a Hunk.

Then, last year, Robin Anderson, 43, and Cindy Brisco, 44, were at a birthday party with their son, Wade, who was conceived with donated sperm. They began a conversation with another mother and realized both children had the same biological father -- donor 48QAH.

Because Niedner had listed himself on the Donor Sibling Registry, the families were able to directly communicate with him, the Free Press said.

"These donors were promised anonymity, but a lot of donors are saying, 'We weren't given any choice,'" said Wendy Kramer, who founded the Donor Sibling Registry, and helps unite half-siblings or helps them meet their biological fathers.
