British official suspended on sex charges

A spokesman for the Home Office confirmed 53-year-old James Dawute has been suspended while the Immigration and Nationality Directorate investigates the charges.

The London Observer reports Dawute is a chief immigration officer at Lunar House in south London, Britain's largest immigration center.

Dawute is accused of telling an 18-year-old rape victim from Zimbabwe he could help her file an asylum application with a better chance at being approved.

Dawute isn't accused of actually offering to trade sex for the help but it is allegedly implied in the way he talked about it with the woman, whose name is being withheld.

Dawute denies any wrongdoing.
