GAZA, May 20 (UPI) -- The Palestinian Authority's top intelligence official has been seriously hurt in an explosion in his Gaza City headquarters.

CNN reports Tareq Abu Rajab was in the elevator of the building when a blast rocked the grounds Saturday sending nine people to a Palestinian hospital.

Rajab was later taken to an Israeli hospital. A bodyguard was killed.

The explosion comes amid trying times in Palestinian politics. Members of the ruling Hamas Party and its predecessor the Fatah Party have been in open and sometimes violent disagreement since January elections.

Rajab is an ally of President Mahmoud Abbas, a member of Fatah.

Hamas officials downplayed accusations it was involved in the explosion, saying it could have been an accident sparked by a grenade.

Saeb Erakat, a top Fatah official, said a cause of the blast isn't known.

The blast further shakes an already unstable peace deal worked out between the two parties last week.

A Hamas member was killed on Tuesday and this week a Hamas-led security force patrolled Gaza streets despite warnings by Abbas that all security forces should be kept under his watch.
