Bilingualism law called discriminatory

OTTAWA, May 19 (UPI) -- Canadians for Language Fairness is suing the city of Ottawa, alleging they were denied jobs because they don't speak French.

The city's bilingualism law took effect in January 2004. The group calls it a "form of social engineering" that benefits the French-speaking population.

Attorney Arthur Cogan said in court the law violates constitutional guarantees of freedom of expression and does not reflect the city's character, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported.
