FBI digs Michigan field for Hoffa remains

DETROIT, May 18 (UPI) -- The FBI used heavy equipment Thursday to dig at a horse farm northwest of Detroit looking for the remains of former Teamsters boss Jimmy Hoffa.

Hoffa was 62 when he vanished from a restaurant parking lot of a Bloomfield Township restaurant on July 30, 1975, on his way to a meeting with Anthony Provenzano, a New Jersey Teamsters boss, and Anthony Giacalone, a Detroit Mafia captain.

FBI Special Agent Dawn Clenney told the Detroit News the search began Wednesday based on a federal search warrant involving a team of agents along with Bloomfield Township police but offered few details.

She declined to say if they were searching for the body but Hoffa's daughter said the FBI had told her they were searching for his remains.

"All they told me is a new tip came in, and they were going to search somewhere in Milford," said Barbara Ann Crancer, a St. Louis administrative law judge.
