Chile releases ex-Peruvian president

SANTIAGO, Chile, May 18 (UPI) -- Chile has granted a conditional release of former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori after being held for six months, El Mercurio reported Thursday.

However Fujimori is still not allowed the leave Chile, said the Chilean Supreme Court.

The ex-Peruvian leader was arrested in Chile earlier this year while traveling to Peru from Japan, where he had been residing since fleeing Peru in 2000.

Fujimori is wanted in Peru on human rights charges and corruption.
