EU Parliament: CIA confirmed renditions

STRASBOURG, France, May 17 (UPI) -- More than one CIA source told a European Parliament committee that 30-50 people underwent so-called rendition, Italian member Claudio Fava said Wednesday.

Following a visit to the United States to investigate allegations of U.S. kidnappings and secret prisons in Europe, Fava said "more than one" CIA source confirmed up to 50 renditions had taken place, Web site EUobserver.com reported.

Committee Chairman Carlos Coelho said U.S. officials' statements had only one point in common: "that it was not possible to organize extraordinary rendition such as this without the active complicity of European governments."

Fava, speaking to reporters in Strasbourg, France, said a "firsthand source" confirmed "the existence of seven black sites operated by the CIA" in Asia, Europe and Africa that, with the exception of an African site, have been closed following public pressure.

The European Parliament committee, which lacks the power to compel testimony, has accused European leaders of trying to sweep the matter under the carpet.
