ATLANTA, May 16 (UPI) -- Federal, state and local officials Tuesday opened the new fifth runway at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta.
Delta and AirTran jets began landing on the 9,000-foot strip for the occasion, although the runway won't be used for daily commercial flights until May 27.
The $1.28 billion runway is expected to be used primarily for landings, allowing more flights into the airport reducing delays at Atlanta, the nation's busiest airport in terms of passenger traffic. Officials say the fifth runway also will ease air traffic congestion across the United States.
One of the largest public construction projects in Georgia history, the runway has been plagued by scandal over contracts and its cost.
The foundation for the strip was created by dirt the equivalent of four Georgia Domes and a bridge crosses I-285, creating a 1,500-foot tunnel for motorists.
The runway project was financed through a mix of bonds, passenger fees and federal allotments.
