Police officer killed by bar robber

PHILADELPHIA, May 9 (UPI) -- Investigators are reviewing security tapes from a Philadelphia bar in hopes of catching a glimpse of the robber who killed a police officer.

Gary Skerski, a 16-year veteran of the police department, was shot in the neck as he responded to the robbery at Pat's Cafe in the Frankford neighborhood late Monday.

The gunman entered the bar and held up patrons, forcing them to give up their money and to withdraw cash from an ATM machine. Witnesses said that he was unhurried and did not appear to be worried about police arriving.

The robbery was filmed by cameras in the bar. Detectives were also reviewing tape going back 10 days in case the man cased the bar earlier.

One of the victims attended a memorial vigil Tuesday night for the slain police officer.

"Officer Skerski saved our lives," the sobbing woman told NBC-Channel 10.

She described the gunman as "just a monster. He had evil eyes."

Skerski is survived by his wife and two teenage children.
