TEL AVIV, Israel, May 9 (UPI) -- The head of Israeli military intelligence predicted Tuesday that Iran will produce nuclear bombs within four years.
Maj. Gen. Amos Yadlin, testifying before the Knesset's Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, said that Iran is "still at the stage of grams" when they need to produce 25 kilograms -- 55 pounds -- of enriched uranium for a nuclear weapon, Ha'aretz reported. But he said that Iran has secret projects underway at its nuclear facility at Natanz.
Other defense officials warned Tuesday that Israel should be cautious in its reaction to the Iranian nuclear program. They were reacting to an interview Monday in which Vice Premier Shimon Peres told a news service that Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad should remember when he threatens Israel that Iran can also be "wiped off the map."
"Israel does not need to spearhead treatment on the Iran matter because this is a world problem," said Amos Gilad, a senior official in the Defense Ministry. "We suggest not adopting a language of threats. It is tremendously important for the world to isolate Hamas and it is tremendously important to isolate Iran."
