Gallaudet faculty reject new president

WASHINGTON, May 9 (UPI) -- Faculty at Gallaudet University, the only U.S. institution dedicated to higher education for the deaf, issued a vote of no confidence on the school's president.

At a packed meeting Monday night, faculty members rejected a motion of support for Jane Fernandes 49 to 96,Tthe Washington Post reported. They went on to pass a series of resolutions asking her to resign, calling for a new search for a president and expressing a lack of confidence in Fernandes and the school's board.

Fernandes, Gallaudet's second deaf president, served as provost for six years. Students claim that she did not do a good job as provost and said they do not feel comfortable with her.

So far, neither side is prepared to back down. Fernandes has said she will not resign and the board continues to support her.

"Jane Fernandes must resign as president of Gallaudet University," said Anthony Mowl, a Gallaudet senior and spokesman for a student-faculty coalition. "We will not accept anything less."
