SHREWSBURY, Mass., May 8 (UPI) -- The last U.S. survivor of the 1912 sinking of the Titanic, Lillian Asplund, has died of natural causes at her Shrewsbury, Mass., home at the age of 99.
Asplund was 5 when the "unsinkable" ship went down on April 15, 1912. There are two remaining survivors who live in Europe who were infants at the time.
Her father, Charles Asplund, and brothers, Clarence, 9, Filip, 13, and her fraternal twin, Carl Edgar, died when the ship sank.
Her mother, Selma and younger brother, Felix, 3, survived the disaster, but have since died, the Framingham (Mass.) Daily News reported.
Philip Maloof, a longtime friend of Asplund, who never married, told the newspaper only after the two knew each other several years would she share some memories of the Titanic.
"She told me it happened and she saw her father on the boat before it went down into the water," Maloof said. Her mother had always told her not to talk about the tragedy, he said.
"To my knowledge she never gave an interview," said Linda Davis, curator at the Shrewsbury Historical Society.
