LONDON, May 7 (UPI) -- British newspapers had scathing criticism of Prime Minister Tony Blair after he dismissed key members of his cabinet last week.

Blair sacked Jack Straw, his foreign secretary, and Charles Clarke, his home affairs minister.

The London Times and The Daily Mail called the prime minister "a butcher." Evoking a comparison with horror movies, the conservative Daily Telegraph labeled the reshuffling a "Nightmare on Downing Street."

Newspapers on Saturday attributed Straw's dismissal to factors including Blair's dislike of Straw's highly publicized friendship with U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. They also mentioned Straw's rejection of a possible military solution in the Iran nuclear crisis and Blair's suspicion that Straw was positioning himself to win favor with Gordon Brown, the chancellor of the exchequer.

In the past, Blair has often taken the lead in running Britain's foreign policy, and Straw's exit may be designed to give him more leeway in the Iran crisis.

The new foreign minister, Margaret Beckett, will be plunged into her new job on Monday as she enters negotiations on Iran at the United Nations.
