Suit filed over Ga. school redistricting

ATLANTA, May 6 (UPI) -- A law suit by Cobb County, Ga., parents and an investigation by federal civil rights officials have stalled plans to redistrict two high schools.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports nine parents of students at McEachern High filed a lawsuit Friday against the Cobb County School District, claiming the plan passed by the school board uses race-based redistricting and doesn't draw down overcrowding at the school.

The parents say Hillgrove High, a new school built to address the overcrowding issue, would have too few students compared to McEachern if the redistricting plan takes place.

The lawsuit was filed in Cobb Superior Court and claims the redistricting violates equal enrollment capacity laws because Hillgrove would be 22.1 percent under capacity and McEachern at 2.3 percent below.

The U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights is also investigating the redistricting proposal and will make a determination after analyzing the racial makeup of students in each school with the redistricting.
