LONDON, May 5 (UPI) -- British Prime Minister Tony Blair removed Foreign Secretary Jack Straw and Charles Clarke as home secretary in a far-reaching Cabinet shuffle Friday.
The changes were described by the Financial Times said as part of an effort to reassert Blair's authority after taking a battering in the English local elections.
Clarke, succeeded by John Reid, one of Blair's closest allies, questioned the prime minister's judgment in removing him.
He told reporters that he had discovered long-standing problems that he wanted to address by remaining in the post. But, Blair said Clarke's remaining in the post "is likely to stand in the way" of necessary reforms.
Blair replaced Straw with two people -- Geoff Hoon, who becomes secretary of state for Europe, and Margaret Beckett, who takes over responsibility for the rest of the world.
