Venezuela pulls ambassador from Peru

CARACAS, Venezuela, May 4 (UPI) -- Venezuela will withdrawal its ambassador from Peru after Lima decided to pull its head of mission from Caracas, Globovision TV reported Thursday.

Peru recalled its ambassador from Venezuela following accusations that Venezuela was interfering in Peru's presidential elections -- when Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez made derogatory comments about presidential hopeful Alan Garcia and openly backed left-wing candidate Ollanta Humala.

Analysts predict Humala will win this month's election.

The United States and Colombia have accused leftist Chavez of trying to increase his political influence throughout the region. Chavez has also been accused of supporting Colombia's leftist rebels -- an accusation he denies.
